Hi everyone, I have been getting a lot of DMs on Instagram asking about my experience as a pre-dental student and asking for my advice in applying to dental school. For those of you who don’t know, I am currently a student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.
Disclaimer: I am simply writing about MY experience in applying to dental school. I cannot say for sure which things will definitely get you accepted into dental school.
- Research - Research has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my undergraduate and graduate years. I was fortunate to connect with an incredible research mentor who provided me with the opportunity to take part in her clinical research projects, both as a senior in undergrad and as a graduate student. In graduate school I also did a written thesis, presentation, and thesis defense. I learned a lot through these research experiences, especially about patient interaction and data analysis, and I also found much inspiration in getting to know my research mentor. I am currently doing research in dental school, as well, but in a laboratory setting.
- Study abroad - During the spring semester of my junior year of undergrad, I took part in a multi-country Public Health study abroad program. The program involved homestays in both rural and urban areas in Vietnam, South Africa, and Brazil. We studied public health in a comparative fashion through lectures and experiential learning. Unfortunately, none of the courses on my program served as pre-dental requirements, but as a future healthcare provider, I found the experience of learning about healthcare at the systemic level to be invaluable. In addition, I believe this experience was one that was discussed in almost all of my dental school interviews.
- Varsity athletics - A large part of my undergraduate experience was my four years on the varsity volleyball team. As with any Division I athletic program, there was a large time commitment involving workouts, summer session, practices, physical therapy, games, and travel. It was definitely a challenge to fit in the pre-dental course requirements and associated labs around my schedule, but I believe the experience was well-worth it. (I love the sport - I then assistant-coached a U15 team during my gap year, and I'm currently the captain of my intramural team at Penn!)
- Gap Year - I was very busy during undergrad between coursework, varsity athletics, research, study abroad, clubs, etc. Taking a gap year allowed me to finish up all of my pre-dental requirements - I completed my biochemistry requirement (which I did not have time to take during undergrad), I completed my dental shadowing hours, I studied for and took the DAT, and I completed my AADSAS application and essays. I was also able to gain additional leadership experience as a volleyball coach and leader of a local volunteer service day.
- Shadowing hours - My general dentist was kind enough to allow me to shadow a substantial number of hours at his practice, and he was very helpful in explaining procedures to me and sharing his knowledge about the ins and outs of practice management. In addition to shadowing my general dentist, I also shadowed a variety of specialties, including a periodontist, orthodontist, pediatric dentist, and endodontist. (As a current dental student, I am very grateful for my specialty shadowing experiences, as it has helped me tremendously in deciding which specialty I am interested in pursuing for residency.)
- Master's Degree - I did a one-year Biotechnology Master's program the year before I began dental school. The program allowed me to further explore the pharmaceutical industry, drug delivery, intellectual property, biotech management strategies, etc. In addition, I had dedicated time to spend doing research, culminating in a thesis defense prior to my graduation. Unfortunately, at times, my dental school interviews conflicted with my graduate lectures, exams, and research duties, but my faculty were very accommodating and I felt that overall, the experience was extremely worthwhile.
- Interview prep - I made sure to prepare my answers to common questions ahead of time, and took the time to thoroughly research each school prior to my interviews. My undergrad/graduate school offered mock interviews, so I scheduled one a few weeks before my first dental school interview. Having the chance to practice in a real interview setting and receive personalized feedback was very helpful.
